I've been trying to understand all the negative reviews of this item. I don't quite understand it and I have to put it down to people not understanding how to install it properly.
This is a sturdy metal gate with two extensions, one for either side. I have a 43.5" opening to my back hallway. I needed an extra wide gate so i picked one up at a local store. It was very high and was very, very hard to step over. I decided I needed one with a gate for walking through.
I found this one here on Amazon but balked when reading some of the reviews about it being "a plastic piece of junk", "unsteady and easily pushed over", etc. I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt since I'm on prime and could receive it quickly and make my own judgement. I figured I'd return either the one I bought locally or this one depending on how it went.
Installation:
For my opening (again 43.5") I needed one of the extenders. They are two different sizes and I used the bigger of the two. Maybe some of the people who had stability issues with the gate used the wrong size extender? IDK...
So the gate has these threaded rods you spin to close the gap between the extender and the wall. They are really easy to adjust because they have adjustment knobs built right in.
NOTE*** - People mentioning that the gate and latch don't line up may have not realized that they do have a gap but once it is tightened in place, that gap closes up. So looking at the gate out of the box you could say it doesn't line up properly but once tightened up and in place it's lined up perfectly.
Within 5 minutes I had this thing tightened up and installed just fine. The swinging gate works like a champ and the locking mechanism is easy to use. I did read about people having problems with the latch but you basically just pull back the latch release on top and lift the gate up to open. You have to lift it because it has a piece that goes over the bottom rail to keep the gate steady on the bottom end.
One thing I didn't do is screw the wall receivers into the wall. It comes with screws to do this but I wanted to check out the functionality before screwing them in. To anyone saying that a child or anyone else could knock this over, obviously didn't screw the wall receivers into a solid wooden part of the wall. If they had, you'd have to bend the entire gate to get it out of those and "knock it over".
So.... Sorry for the long review but I hate seeing products get slammed for peoples failings in installation. I seriously wanted to pass on this item but I'm very glad I didn't. Worth the price and I won't be face planting in the middle of the night headed to the bathroom anymore.

Should have ordered sooner
I spent 3 months undecided about what gate to buy to keep our small dog (about 6 pounds) in our kitchen area but still allow easy access through the doorway for our family including 2 children ages 5 and 7. Our doorway was exactly 48 inches (4 feet) wide and we wanted something that was pressure mounted so as not to have to drill into the wood. We have had the gate now 2 days and I only wish I had ordered sooner. Here are my thoughts about the gate: 1) Cheap - wow - for a metal wide, step through gate, you certainly can't beat this price (bonus - even has super saver shipping!) 2) Easy to install - my 5 year old son "helped" me. Was out of the box and ready for use in under 10 minutes. Notes - we have exactly a 48 inch opening and used both extensions (6 inch and 12 inch). If you have a space that is just under that - say 47 or 47 1/2, I don't think this gate will work for you with these extensions. We had JUST enough space to get the gate in place and tension it enough to hold in place. I believe they do sell a 3 inch extension separately however. For the price, however, you may still come out ahead of other gates even if you have to buy that. 3) Sturdiness - certainly sturdy enough for a pet and heavy everyday use. We used both both extensions and because of that, there is some flexing where they connect. Not sure I would 100% trust it for use with a strong toddler, but works great for our needs. 4) Latch / opening mechanism - I have uploaded pictures as this gate has a different latch than any of the other Regalo gates I have seen pics of. Maybe they changed it recently as I did see one review involving harm to a child from the latch mechanism. It is a very simple mechanism - basically a locking pin attached to a plastic slide piece. You slide it and then you can lift and swing the gate open. Since we are using only for the dog, the slide step is overkill for us (and my 5 year old could NOT do it). To "fix" this, I simply slid the lock to the "open" position and used a white zip tie to keep it in place. Now all we have to do is lift and swing - easy as pie, but obviously still works to keep the dog in place. 5) Step over - this gate does have a 1 inch bar you have to step over. Yes, I did already stub my toe once, however we are used to our other gate which has a threshold you step on, so just a matter of getting used to it no doubt. 6) Width - The walk through width seems just fine. Not quite as wide as our other gate, but easy enough for both hubby and I to walk through without turning sideways or anything. 7) Gate portion - STAYS OPEN - this was a key feature for me. I needed the gate to stay open at times, when the dog was hanging out with the family or was outside. It also swings open in either direction which was also important to me. 8) Width of bars - I read some reviews that the bars were wider on the side - as you can see in the picture, the bars are nice and narrow. No way our pup can get through!!! All in all, I would highly recommend this gate. I am soooo glad I finally bought it!

We purchased this product for our 25-30 pound dog. We needed a wider gate as our hallways measured 43". Prior attempts to create a gate out of other products had failed. I saw the mixture of comments claiming the gate was weak and did not fit together correctly. Based on our puppies actions, we needed a gate badly so I decided to give this product a try.
The gate came well packaged and was easy to remove from the box. My 5 year old daughter was able to assist me and I completed the gate in less than 10 minutes. The directions were very small, but were able to be put together easily. I used the longer extension to fit the hallway. I did not need the smaller extension. I placed the gate in the hallway and used the wall fasteners to keep the gate tight to the wall. It was easy to tighten up the gate so that there was no gap in the gate.
I saw many reviews that stated this gate was weak and flimsy. I did not use the screws into the wall and this gate is very strong and snug. I believe a failure to install the gate correctly has led to poor reviews. My family and I would buy another one of these if needed.
