I just pitted 2 lbs. of cherries for a cobbler and was done in 10 minutes; SOOOO appreciative of the time savings and the unstained fingers!!! I would recommend that you watch as each pit is ejected; it's so efficient that you might be tempted not to bother but I did have three cherries whose pits stayed inside the cherry and that would be an unpleasant surprise to find in your pie or cobbler. Also, twice, I had a pit that was large enough to get stuck in the ejection hole and I needed to dislodge them with a wooden skewer, easily done and not a big deal - especially when you consider how many cherries are in 2 lbs.
This gadget is well worth having! It seems well enough made that you'll probably never have to replace it. I'm probably going to buy a couple more and have them for shower/hostess gifts.

The splatter guard works beautifully and makes the process much neater, with zero clean up. Very little effort is needed to pit the cherries, so if you have arthritis or other hand / muscle concerns, know that it's doesn't take a lot of pressure or the total closing of your hand into a fist to make it work.
It's very easy to clean, and the lock to close it makes it easy to store and to get out of a drawer (it doesn't get caught on things as it would if it were stored in its open setting).
One thing that I did note was that a couple of the cherries (literally two out of scores) still had the pit in, but if you are paying even a little bit of attention, you can tell that the pit didn't fall out and can easily pull it out with the center part that is still hanging off the bottom of the cherry. I haven't tried this on olives (and probably won't), so I can't speak to how well it works on those, but it definitely won't work for anything bigger than a cherry. I had to squeeze in a couple of extra large cherries, so its use is definitely limited to its stated purpose. That's fine by me as that's what I bought it for.
It's so easy to use and so effective that I will be eating more cherries this year than ever before!
The splatter guard is a nice feature, but not a 100% solution. I would still recommend covering your work surface and wearing an apron to avoid stains from the fine mist of juice that escapes the guard. And you'll obviously want to do your pitting over a bowl, because all that juice has to go somewhere.
Cleanup is excellent, thanks to its dishwasher-safe design. I remove the guard and stand it on a tine in the dishwasher, then put the pitter wherever I can find room on the top rack. It takes up very little space in my gadget drawer when locked in the closed position.
If this item only claimed to pit cherries, I would say it does its job very well. But the description also says it does olives, and I was not pleased with the results when I used it on some castelvetranos. It mangled and crushed the olives, and it was difficult to push the pits through. I worried about breaking the pitter by pushing too hard, so I stopped. It's not flimsy, but having to apply that much force made it sound like it was straining the plastic. I think its effectiveness greatly depends on the variety and size of olive. A softer olive that also doesn't cling so tightly to its pit may have better results.

The device is well made, and fits a medium sized hand quite well, not requiring a lot of force to operate. The device operates like a hand held stapler, with the fulcrum at one end, for leverage. It measures 5.5 in. in length, 6 in. with the locking stem pulled out. The business end comprises a cherry seat, and a 1.5 in. prong, both metal, as is the hinge pin at the other end. Imbedded in the device is the V shaped metal linear spring that exerts the tension to open the device for use.
The translucent guard does contain the juice spatter, directing it in a downward direction. It is best done in a kitchen sink over a metal pan.
The device pits the cherry successfully at least 95% of the time, having less success if the cherry is not firm. It works remarkably well, but it is wise to visualize the extruded pit and hear the ping as it hits the metal pan , in case a pit is missed in the process.
A quick rinse under the tap cleans this device easily.
