Meet the Trainer - Shaun T
Born Shaun Thompson, Shaun T first made a name for himself as a track‑and‑field star at Rowan University, where he received a BS in Sports Science with a minor in Theater and Dance.
Since then he's put both degrees to epic use—appearing on HBO's Six Feet Under, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, CNN, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Good Morning America, and The Doctors—and working with Nike, Boost Athletic Shoes, RadioShack, and the LA Lakers.
In 2007, Shaun T created the phenomenally successful dance‑based workout, Hip Hop Abs. A year later, he followed that with another big hit—Rockin' Body—as well as two workouts for children—Shaun T's Fit Kids Club and Get Real with Shaun T.
In 2009, Shaun T and Beachbody blew up the fitness world with the launch of INSANITY, a 60‑day total‑body conditioning workout that's insanely hard—but gets incredible results.
Over the next few years, the INSANITY workout series continued to grow with the launch of INSANITY: THE ASYLUM, the sports-specific training program based on drills used by pro athletes; and THE ASYLUM Volume 2—the next 30 days of jaw‑dropping, competition‑crushing workouts.
Then in 2013, Shaun T again revolutionized the fitness industry by creating FOCUS T25, a jam‑packed workout program that makes every minute count, so you can get an hour's worth of results in just 25 minutes.
Now, with INSANITY MAX:30, Shaun T lays down a new challenge—to push yourself to a new personal best every time you work out. It's the craziest 30 minutes of your day, but he gives you all the tools you need to get the best results of your life.

My main complaints with exercise dvds have been: annoyingly perky chicks, bad music, complicated moves, too long for a beginner, or just boring. I avoided all of those with this dvd. Shawn is a great teacher. He's really funny (and adorable) and makes the moves really simple before speeding up. I've got to say my favorite feature is the countdown bar. Not only does it countdown the entire workout, but each section as well. I find this very helpful as many a time, I've just given up in the middle of a tape with no idea how much was left. But having a constant reminder that there's only x minutes left is great incentive. I also like that each workout is about a half hour. You can do one, or as many as you like and it's all very convenient for any busy schedule. Now, while I anxiously put in one workout the second I got it, I wanted to write a review after doing all of them.
The first, fat burning cardio is my favorite. It's about 30min and the pace is really good for a beginner. The breaks are in all the right places and Shawn doesn't begin to throw in any difficult moves. There's a move breakdown on the dvd I accidentally ignored, but managed to keep up nonetheless and got it after one viewing. The more used to this routine I got, I began to pair this half hour workout with the 20 or so min. sculpt routine on the second disc (wish these two were on the same disc but that's ok). Then the last workout is a total body workout about 40min which really gets you sweating. Great all around content. Note, it may be helpful if you're physically able, to add light wrist weights to your workouts once you get the routines down. Nothing too heavy. But I really just love the production of these workouts. I also just bought TurboJam since they're by the same company and seem very similar in production style (including the countdown bar, dance atmosphere, and fun music). Can't wait to begin alternating these workouts with TJ workouts for a nice month of constant variety.
The only minor complaint I have which doesn't affect the results of my workout, is the music is not quite as hip hoppy as I thought it would be. The music is more like remastered pop music. For someone who is new to hip-hop this is good because it won't overwhelm you or compete with Shaun T when he is explaining the moves or leading you to the next step. Maybe that is why the music is like that but since I am a hip hop head, I was hoping for more hip hop style music. The dances are sort of hip hoppish so maybe that's how he came up with the name. Either way, I think you will enjoy this dvd. Shaun T is a good instructor and he leads/teaches the moves in a way that left me confident to do the moves when it was time to execute.

I found the first couple of times my hips and shoulders AND feet would just not synchronise. I am NOT a dancer, but it gets better and you can really start to get into it. In week or two more, I will be just about ready to embarrass myself on the dance floor lol.
What you get...My version looks different to the one shown in the photos as at 15/11/12. I received two dvd packs, containing 3 dvds.
It includes:
Secret to Flat Abs. Watch this FIRST. Tilt, Tuck and Tighten is the key, and you need to be doing this to get the results.
Fat Burning Cardio. You work through some routines at half tempo and then put it together. It's fun and pretty much every minute counts. PCD Don't Cha is one of the songs you will work out to.
Ab sculpt. You do more dance moves with emphasis on the abs in this one, and some crunch type movements in the "C Sit" position. These however aren't the main focus. You can definitely feel them working though.
Total Body Burn (not done this one yet - will report back)
Take it to the dance floor. I've watched this one only, it's a bit too advanced for me yet.
Last Minute Abs. (again not done this yet).
Also, last minute Hips, Buns and Thighs.
And Last minute Buns.
If you aren't a gym person, or someone who can get enthused about doing boring routines and reps, then this is for you. I've only recently got back into exercise and I find this very motivating and even more so when I mix it with other programs aswell.
I should add that this guy can very seriously move! He is a real joy to watch. None of the dancers behind him come even close to how this man moves (and they are pretty good). He is mesmerising, another reason why you will want to press play again and again. He's also funny and doesn't have that "how wonderful am i?" arrogance about him. A very likeable chap with the body of a god! There is nothing not to like here.
Other reviewers have commented on sore backs etc. The first time I did this my back felt like it had a going over, not painful, but I was aware of it. It was not so bad that I couldn't do the following day's workout. So my advice would be, if you are unused to exercise, take those first workouts a bit easy and find out where you are at rather than go bananas and injure yourself. Also if you are tilt, tucking and tightening properly, expect to be aware of your abs the next day.
What else do you get?
I received a tape measure. Take measurements, and record them. It is really motivating to see the inches fall off. You also get an eating plan and a workout calender as well as a small leaflet detailing what you can eat when you go out to restaurants. It includes burger and pizza joints. I didn't find this too helpful as I'd rather go hungry than eat at MuckDonalds, but if Pizza Hut etc are your poison, this could be handy to guide you through the healthier choices.
Any negatives?
Well hmm yes. Even when you press regular volume music as opposed to even louder music as an option, Shaun T is a bit muffled. It's not a huge problem since watching what he is doing is more important. If I could deduct 0.5 star for that I would.
In the words of a famous sporting goods manufacturer whose name escapes me, "Just do it!"
Got to say I'm pretty happy with the DVDs so far and have used them for around three weeks, but I need to point I'm not following the program at the moment as I've been mixing it up with a fair amount of cycling - BUT if you want to get the best results from these Workouts you do need to stick to the program & ideally combine it with some form of sensible eating. That said, I can definitely feel the difference in my abs and although I've still got my 40-something paunch I can see definition starting to come through and feel my abs becoming firmer under the remaining flab.
Now the evenings are drawing in & the weathers worse for cycling my plan is to start from scratch again with Hip Hop Abs & do the full month, then go back to T25 & complete that before maybe doing the first half of Insanity (the second half is too plain crazy!). If you're wondering where to start with Shaun T's Beachbody workouts and you're getting back into exercise then thats definitely the order I'd recommend doing these in...
In terms of the DVDs themselves, I've only used a couple but find them fun & varied, the focus is on the abs but you get a good cardio / arms / legs workout too. There is a little bit of floor work (but only 5 mins out of the hour of DVDs I've seen) but because its the exception it adds a bit of variety and is good.
As a couple of people of said the sound quality for the instructions from Shaun is poor but put the volume up & its ok, also you soon get the hang of what you should be doing. The music is pop more than hip hop & not what I'd choose to listen to but is great for this type of workout so no complaints there.
At this price try it, as always you get out what you put in but its not too difficult, its enjoyable and it works!
(I'm glad I bought first Focus T25 instead of buying HipHop ABS first, as HipHop ABS wouldn't have inspired me to go further)
Pros:
The workouts are good -for a beginner- (they are too easy if you are used to T25/insanity workouts).
They give some results with no doubt.
It's more like an easy-going class in the gym, but at home.
Exercises aren't hard to follow and if you need it there is a modifier (loyal Tania) to follow.
If you don't have any kind of rhythm you may find it odd at the very beginning.
Cons:
None that's affecting the results of the workouts, they are just little details of the "surround" that I personally didn't like much.
In my opinion the images of the filming they change too often and too quickly which could be annoying and confusing.
The team unfortunately is not doing the exercises they should do -all in the same way- as they kind of personalise the exercises and sequence.
They definitely look more like dancers than a team acting as one and training in the same way.
You need weights/weighted gloves for one session.
Shaun is a bit "too much" when trying to involve you and to make you as happy as he is...too many yo, yo'll, uh-uh and ah-ah for me. I personally don't like his little rap at the beginning of the DVDs.
I normally "love" Shaun in T25, in Insanity, but not here.
Sorry Shaun! ;(
The DVDs contain extra things that you will not actually use according to the weekly plan, which for me is a bit annoying.
I would have preferred not to have them or to have a little tip saying "if you want to go a bit extra then add this session before or after so and so..."
There are proper quick dance sessions (to be done only for your own pleasure of learning some choreography) in which in few minutes they teach you small choreography, but the lights are very dark because they are on a disco dance floor and sometimes the team/Shaun moves too quickly so sometimes I found hard to get the right steps...I guess you have to pause and play it slowly?!
Again all of this is just due to my personal preference, it really doesn't compromise the results you get if you follow the program.
Overall the workout brings results so I gave 4 stars for this reason.
It's hard to keep the volume on for me though! I prefer less smiles/excitement and more hard work!
I would recommend this only if you love dancing, if you like kind of American (clean) slang and enthusiastic people and are a beginner who needs to start exercising or if you love dancing and are looking for something easy to add to your regular moderate-intense training.
