Testing the Waters
In order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. Most common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH. All may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly. Testing aquarium water weekly will aid in keeping your most important water parameters within the proper range for your aquarium. Choose from a wide range of API testing options, such as our popular FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT or 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS, for accurate water evaluation. Regular testing will help you easily determine your aquarium conditions.

Product Description
Testing water parameters weekly helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish. Fish continually release ammonia into the aquarium through their gills, urine and solid waste. Uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to the water. Small amounts of ammonia stress fish; large amounts of ammonia kill fish. Ammonia is the #1 killer of freshwater fish. The API AMMONIA TEST KIT for freshwater and saltwater squariums contains two liquid dropper bottles, easy-to-read instructions with information on how to test and correct unsafe water conditions, two color charts and a test tube with snap-tight cap. This test kit reads ammonia levels from 0 to 8 ppm. Use the API API AMMONIA TEST KIT several times a week for 4-6 weeks when you start a new aquarium, and then use it weekly for monitoring or when problems occur. This aquarium test kit is for use in freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
With API aquarium products, it’s easy to keep a beautiful saltwater, freshwater or reef aquarium. For almost 60 years API has developed premium solutions with proven and effective results for your family and ours. API offers a range of testing kits, water conditioners, and nutritionally superior food, because we’re dedicated to making a better underwater world. They work to provide a safe, hospitable environment for fish such as tropical community fish, cichlids, goldfish and more. At API, we understand the rewards and relaxation of fishkeeping because we have a passion for fish too.

Please Read Instructions Before Use
Ingredients
polyethylene glycol
Directions
Fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of water to be tested, or to the line on the tube. Add 8 drops from ammonia test solution bottle #1, holding the dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniform drops. Next, add 8 drops from ammonia test solution bottle #2, holding the bottle the same way as bottle #1. Cap the test tube and shake vigorously for 5 seconds, then wait an additional 5 minutes for color to develop. Read the test results by comparing the color of the solution to the appropriate ammonia color card (either freshwater or saltwater). The tube should be viewed in a well-lit area against the white of the card. The closest match indicates the level of ammonia in the water sample. Rinse the test tube with clean water after use. Do not pour test tube contents back into aquarium or pond.

These kits have been around for ages and are very accurate if you use them for their true intended purpose; freshwater community tanks or similar. Don't try and use the nitrite or ammonia for saltwater tanks of any sort (even though the kits say the can do salt water, they don’t do it well). Don't use the pH test kit for tanks that need exact pH values for high pH animals like cichlids (though this is less of a problem if you read below). These tests are extremely economical and provide many more tests per dollar than any other kits available.
My son is six and my daughter is four. We decided to raise tadpoles twice this year and needed to monitor ammonia, nitrite, and pH. The 40-ish year old design of these kits still fit that bill perfectly and were exactly what we needed. I wish the scale on the pH kit went higher, but it goes high enough for community fish. Tadpoles here tend to like higher pH values of ~8.2 and the pH kit doesn't go that high. However, I got a rough enough estimate if the pH test indicated that the pH was off the chart high as water isn't going to go much above 8.2 unless you use chemicals inappropriately to alter ph.
Ammonia and nitrite test kits worked perfectly as in the past and averted many potential tadpole disasters and crying children. We've kept snails, clams, some minnows, and loads of plants in the tank while the tadpoles have developed so the bio load was always changing.
Still great kits even after 40 years at a very affordable price.
Highly recommended for their intended usage scenario.
