Life has a way of provoking us with traffic jams and computer malfunctions, with emotionally distant partners and crying children—and before we know it, we're upset. We feel terrible, and then we end up saying and doing things that only make matters worse. But it doesn't have to be that way, says Pema Chödrön. It is possible to relate constructively to the inevitable shocks, losses, and frustrations of life so that we can find true happiness. The key, Pema explains, is not biting the "hook" of our habitual responses. In this recorded weekend retreat, Pema draws on Buddhist teachings from The Way of the Bodhisattva to reveal how we can:

   • stay centered in the midst of difficulty
   • improve stressful relationships
   • step out of the downward spiral of self-hatred
   • awaken compassion for ourselves and others

About the Author

Pema Chödrön is an American Buddhist nun in the lineage of Chögyam Trungpa. She is resident teacher at Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia, the first Tibetan monastery in North America established for Westerners. She is the author of many books and audiobooks, including the best-selling When Things Fall Apart and Don't Bite the Hook.

From AudioFile

In this production, recorded during a weekend retreat before a rapt audience, Buddhist nun Pema Chdrn teaches listeners about the value of patience and how to avoid biting the hook of habitual anger or defensiveness. Although shes speaking without a script, Chdrn is wonderfully articulate and never repetitive as she uses fresh, direct language. She is also a spiritual leader with a sense of humor; her intelligent voice and easy laugh make everything she has to say more inviting to consider, even when shes talking about new approaches that run counter to our human impulses for retaliation and self-protection. Her compassion, which appears to spring from deep self-knowledge, makes her reflections all the more compelling. J.C.G. I like this because the content is presented in a gentle, understandable way by a kind-sounding narrator. In total, it's less than 4 hours of content, so it won't carry you across the country. Still, it is worth hearing again (and again) before sharing with friends and family. My local library loans books on CD but (sadly!) did not have this one. I will recommend its purchase. The content is universal, approachable, and important.

After 18 months reporting to an abusive boss, I was so angry that I could barely sleep. I felt like anger was actually making me physically ill, so when a friend recommended this CD to me, I was ready for it. Pema Chödrön is translating and expanding verses written by Shanti Dava for a modern western audience throughout. I found her insights and delivery to be compelling, moving and relatable, despite not being a Buddhist myself. Not being familiar with her work, I was worried she'd be preachy or sound out of touch with my experience but she has clearly had her own experiences with anger and her self effacing humor did much to reassure me that the person talking knew exactly what I was going through.

I will probably need to review this cd over and over again to really hold on to the lessons but the first listen helped me more than I would have thought possible and, thanks to the lessons I've been able to hold on to, I'm already having an easier time not biting the hook and avoiding reactions to adversity that would have made me, and those around me, very miserable.

Pema Chodron speaks to the challenges that face us in our daily lives so gracefully and with a lovely sense of humor that adds a brilliance and freshness to challenging topics. Whether a practicing Buddhist or not, the teachings here will help transform anyone's life if applied. I loved the quality of the audio which sometimes during live talks can be lost. I listened to each of the four cds at least four times each, and will certainly be listening to them again. There is so much depth in the talks that you can gain more and more insight with each listening. Perfect for the car and traveling. Thank you Pema for your wisdom, insight and humor... and thank you for challenging us to not bite the hooks! (And what to do when we find that we are already hooked.)

Don't Bite the Hook has been extremely helpful to me. After reading Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach (THE most helpful book I've read in years), I was more ready to listen to Pema Chodron again. In my previous experiences, I must admit I felt a little put off by Chodron's use of specifically Buddhist terminology and felt like I needed to become a Buddhist to benefit from her teachings. Not so! If you just ignore the words that sound foreign, you'll find that her concepts are universally helpful. As a person who has frequently been "hooked" into unnecessarily painful and excessive emotional rections to people and situations, I find that I am actually much more peaceful now. I can recognize that I don't need to always react to others' pain, and that a compassionate response is ever so much better for me and the people involved. And it wasn't that hard to do! She is practical and humorous to boot -- just don't get caught up in the Buddhist vocabulary if you're not a Buddhist!

The entire book is wonderful -- after reading so many works (and listening to some talks) by noted teachers and other Buddhist practitioners about this or that element of the philosophy/faith, it's refreshing to just hear someone talk. That is, rather than innundating a lay listening like myself with this or that concept in Sanskrit or Pali and using confusing allegories that made perfect sense when they were related several thousand years ago, listening to the wonderful words of Pema Chodron is so nice.
Above all other teachers, she talks to me -- and the many thousands of others who listen to hear -- as if she were a friend. She tells me about her own experiences and then makes fun of herself and so I don't feel like she's someone above me, someone to work at trying to be. She just seems to be someone who is further along the same path I'm walking down.
The only reason that I have any problem with this audio book is that the idea of Shenpa in the book was still a little unclear to me after I had finished it. Although now I know that Shenpa is a bit ephemeral; this was never explained, clearly at least, in the book.

Ok, so it may sound kind of dramatic to say something I listen to via CD would be life changing. But it has been. I have been working personally on the exact issues addressed in the book. So for that reason it really hit home. Pema Chodren has such a knack for re-stating something, creating an analogy, and in that moment I think "Ohhhh, now I get it". Of course! How simple, how helpful. I have listened to this repeatedly while driving. And every time, it reinforces what I already took note of, or I hear something new, and it soaks in more. I find myself referring back to it mentally when I am circleing the bait. I will probably have to work on this the rest of my life, but for me at this time, what a difference it has made. Thank you Pema Chodren!
